IGNORE THE ICEBERGS
We humans have many faults, but I believe that one of the biggest faults is that of arrogance. Arrogance can be defined as knowing that a course of action is dangerous and ignoring that danger and taking the action anyhow. One example was the actions taken by the captain of the ocean liner Titanic. In its day it was one of the most luxurious ships that had ever been built. There was even one comment that God himself could not sink that great ship. It was so ironic that on the ship’s maiden voyage it struck an iceberg and sunk to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.
It was a well-known fact that in that area of the ocean, at that time of year, the threat of icebergs was very real. The captain of the ship knew of the danger that was in the darkness, but he foolishly ignored the danger and plowed straight into the darkness. Even after the ship struck the iceberg, most of the crew and passengers had no idea that the Titanic would be resting on the floor of the ocean within a couple of hours. The story of the Titanic reminds me of the way our government is steering our financial ship.
Just a couple of days ago our national debt passed the 16 trillion dollar mark. When someone tells you that our country is broke that is a huge understatement, for us to be broke we would have to come up with 16 trillion dollars. I have been watching the national party conventions and have noticed the frenzy that some of the people get into while cheering for their candidate. It is easy to get caught up in the emotion of the moment, but we need to have a more somber mood concerning the condition of the economy of our nation.
While some candidates will promise you the moon, we need to realize that the solutions ahead will not be easy and will be painful. We conservatives know that the only logical solution is to reduce spending and stop creating debt that will stifle future generations for decades to come. All of us have good ideas for our private lives and for our government, but just like in our personal finances we are forced to prioritize. My liberal counterparts many times fail to understand that concept of prioritization. Maybe they can have a good idea, but even though we cannot afford it they will insist that we do it anyway regardless of the cost. I have been told that the path to hell is littered with good intentions.
In future columns I will talk about the financial cliff that we Americans will encounter on January 1, 2013. If we continue to go full speed into the darkness the fate of our country will be the same as the Titanic so many years ago.
