A DEBT OF HONOR
One of the greatest things about our nation was the way our people worked to ensure that the generations that came after them had things better than they did. As I look to the election that is just ahead of us I can see that we Americans are going to be forced to decide what kind of country that we are going to leave for future Americans.
Our founders were honorable men who insisted that we Americans would always pay our debts. Every two years we have elections, and it seems that we are always bombarded with the same clichés year after year. We set back in our chairs and base our vote upon the politician who makes the biggest promise of something for nothing. I would like to share a revelation; there is nothing for free. Most people can understand the concept that a bank card will run out if no money is added back. Money has to be taken from someone for the government to be giving out this so-called free money.
Far too many of us become blinded with all of the promises made and we set back and look forward to all of the freebies that will soon be coming. Instead of just worshiping the candidates and waiting for our freebies, we should be asking them where they intend to get the money. Most states are spending more money each year, and consequently they are relying upon the federal government for more funds each year. We need to remind ourselves that for our federal government to be broke it would have to come up with 16 trillion dollars.
I often wonder why so many Americans have become so blind to the fact that the next generation will be poorer and less influential in the world than our generation. When you look at it objectively, my generation has let them down. Sadly we are going down the same path as countless other societies who forgot the importance of leaving a better society for their heirs.
If we decide that we want to leave a better country to the future generation it is up to all of us to start working to improve this country now, not later. Our founders faced a huge debt that would rival ours today. After the revolutionary war our young nation owed many other countries a huge debt that was comparable to today’s standard. They considered the debt as a debt of honor and they paid it all off. They wanted our young nation to have a stellar credit rating, and because of that we became the major economic power in the world. Maybe we should rediscover the idea of a debt of honor.
