MIRROR, MIRROR ON THE WALL
Most all of us have seen the story of Snow White and read about the evil woman who would look into the magic mirror and say, “Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all?” Granted, the story of Snow White is a simple children’s story, but it illustrates many people’s desire to be something special even though their actions prove otherwise. Far too often we humans have a habit of seeing what we want to see instead of the true reflection. As I look at the problems that are facing our nation as a whole, I feel that it is time that we Americans take a hard, unbiased look in the mirror.
In the early days of our nation the French historian Alex Tocqueville wrote about the rapid rise of the United States of America. He saw all of the natural resources that our nation has been blessed with, but he understood those resources were not the source of our greatness. He knew the source once he observed the moral and religious teaching in the churches of America and saw the convictions of the founders of our nation. He was quoted as saying, “ America is great because she is good, but if she ever ceases to be good she will cease to be great.”
We Americans like to pat ourselves on the back and brag about how good we are, but as a whole we could be doing a lot better. Have we Americans forgotten the Judeo Christian values that our country was founded upon, or have we become ashamed of them? On the issue of spending and debt, we are clearly warned that the borrower will be the slave to the lender. While our president is outraged with the deaths of children in Syria, he and many Americans are unconcerned with the killing of millions of unborn children in this country, in the name of choice. How good are we when we continue to elect people of shady character to represent us because they may provide some special favor that benefits us at the expense of others? How good are we when we are afraid to stand up and help those who are fighting for the freedoms that so many died for because we think it might offend someone or it might hurt business? How good are we when we go along and let our children watch some of today’s prime time entertainment that would make a sailor blush?
My friends, taking care of our nation and preserving our freedoms is our business. Albert Einstein once said, “The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who watch them without doing anything.” Our problems in America are just symptoms of steadily declining morals. I wonder if Alex Tocqueville were alive today would he see a great nation with good people?
