Fighting fire with Fire

Sometimes the best way to put out a fire is with a fire. Many times fire gets out of control in rugged terrain and covers a vast amount of landscape before firefighters are able to get to it's location. After summing up the span of the fire firefighters my choose to backfire ahead of the fire front to provide a black line. A line where available fuel sources are already consumed, thereby causing the fire to end at that point.

But stopping fire with backfire techniques doesn't begin there; but with training in fire prevention and public education. If you can educate the public to some level of understanding, you may have stopped the fire even before it began. This goes even deeper, if you stop the fire before it began, you may have saved a life, or somebodies home. Natural disasters cost in the terms of Billions each year, some can not be controlled to well, but others can be minimized by exercise of common engineering controls. Keep rubbish and vegetation to a minimum around houses and out buildings, don't allow unprotected flammable liquids accumulate. Always coordinate burning activities with your local fire department and reduce the likelihood of fire spread by keeping fire extinguishers handy. Finally learn how to use the fire extinguishers you've got.
Observation of burn bans are paramount and may save in cost of damages due to an out of control fire.
