DAY OF RECKONING
All of us at one time or the other has had to make some difficult decision in our personal lives. If we lose our jobs or have some unexpected expense, we are often forced to make the hard choices and set priorities for the things that we need instead of the things that we want. In the case of a lay off, many people are only given a couple of week’s notice that they are going to lose their job. Usually the gravity of the situation doesn’t set in until the worker is walking out the gate with his or her last pay check. Then the reality sets in that there won’t be any more money until another job is found. In less than a week we Americans are going to face a day of reckoning and most of the population of this country hasn’t given it the attention that it deserves.
On November 23rd, the bi-partisan super committee is scheduled to give a report on how to cut the federal budget by 1.2 trillion dollars over the next ten years. The committee is made up of 6 Democrats and 6 Republicans. From all of the reports that I have heard, the committee is completely deadlocked. To achieve the 1.2 trillion cut, one side wants to raise taxes and the other side wants to gut spending. Even if they could come up with some miracle they would still have to sell it to the congress and it is highly unlikely that any action will come from it. They issues that they are deadlocked on are the exact same issues that caused all of the debate earlier this year. Even if they could sell it to congress the American voters would more than likely throw a fit when they see the sacrifices that they would demand of them. If no agreement can come from the committee huge automatic cuts will come to our military, health, education, drug enforcement, national parks, agriculture programs, and Medicare.
Whenever a trillion dollars is cut from the above departments it will have an effect on our total economy that many people have not even thought of. Jobs will be lost and tax revenues will fall because less people will be paying into the system. I might remind everyone that the primary purpose of our government is the protection of our country and way of life. Defense has always been something that the politicians are willing to sacrifice but in this day and time we cannot let our guard down. We Americans are about to pay a huge price for all of the irresponsible promises that our leaders have made in the past.
