RUBBER BAND POWER

When I was a child I enjoyed building model airplanes, usually they were made of balsa wood and had a rubber band in them that could be wound up and it would provide the power for the airplane to fly. Usually the flight didn’t last long and I found myself spending more time winding up the rubber band than I ever did watching the model plane fly. I am beginning to think that we might start looking for an automobile that has some type of rubber band engine for us to get around. Earlier this week our president nixed the deal for the Keystone pipeline that would have delivered Canadian crude oil to our country and relieve some of the dependence on oil from the Persian Gulf.

For our country to prosper we must have a reliable source of oil to fuel our energy needs. It is a fact that we are buying oil from countries that have little love or respect for we Americans. For instance in the Persian Gulf, the Iranians are doing a lot of saber rattling and threatening to close oil tanker traffic in the Strait of Hormuz where a huge part of the world’s supplies travel every day. Just the talk of any action causes the price of gasoline in this country to jump immediately. If we actually get into a shooting war in the gulf there is no telling how high the price could go. According to some recent estimates the price of a gallon of gasoline will be over the four dollar range by May of this year.

In my opinion time is not on our side, the Keystone pipeline would take some time to complete but it would have given us a stable source of crude oil. The Canadians are not sponsoring terrorism against us or our allies, as far as I know they bear no hostility against the United States. Another benefit, the pipeline would create many construction jobs that would improve the infrastructure of our country instead of providing the capital for various countries to undermine our country. The excuse given for denying the pipeline was because of environmental issues. The ideas of using pipelines are not anything new. There are already thousands of miles of all kinds of pipelines across this country. I believe using the best technology available and having a rigorous inspection program will avert a major disaster. I believe that the bigger disaster will be to do nothing and remain under the thumb of people that have little respect for us or our way of life. If we stay on the current course maybe we should all start buying some big rubber bands and start winding up our autos and hope that we can get to work and back home, assuming that we will even have a job.
