NO FREE LUNCH
Over the past several years I have noticed that our country has many problems; but I feel that they can all be solved when we Americans use common sense and discipline in our decision-making process. When looking at our problems objectively, one of the biggest is the attitude that far too many people have about getting something for nothing. When any person falls into that mentality they unknowing become prey to unscrupulous politicians that will promise anything to get elected. One of the biggest ‘something for nothing scams’ is the Obama Healthcare law that was argued before the Supreme Court earlier this week.
Even before we get into whether the law is constitutional or not we need to use some common sense about the ramifications of this law. Anytime you listen to any political speech you will hear all about the plan to create good jobs for the American people. Being from the business sector I know that many potential employers are not going to go out on a limb by hiring new employees because they know that they will be unable to pay the premiums and still make a profit. It is a sad state of affairs in our country when we are willing to forget common sense and buy into the ‘something for nothing’ argument. Many years ago a wise man told me that there is no such thing as a free lunch; someone somewhere always foots the bill.
The administration has used the argument for forcing Americans to purchase insurance because they claim everyone will need it at some time in their lives. With that being the case, why stop at just insurance? Sooner or later all humans must eat and drink in order to survive; maybe we should start forcing all of our citizens to purchase a certain kind of food or face a fine or penalty. One of our Founding Fathers warned us in his writings over 200 years ago about such actions. One warning said that “when we are willing to trade our freedom for security we would have neither and deserve neither”. I am not willing to trade my freedom for any half-baked scheme that promises something for nothing. From the testimony I heard, the opponents to the bill made a very convincing case against it. While I am no lawyer, I feel that the actions of the Congress and our president were contrary to the ideas of our founders. The sooner we Americans accept the truth that there is no such thing as a free lunch the sooner we will be on the path to a true recovery.
