THE CONSERVATIVE VIEW

BY RUSSELL TURNER

ASTONISHED AND ALARMED

I once listened to a speech in which the speaker was taking about how informed the American people were concerning current events. The speaker was very well informed on current events and traveled extensively across the world. During the speech he commented on how people from other parts of the world viewed we Americans. He said, “People from across the globe were astonished of how ill informed we Americans are but they were alarmed how the news media influences and controls the American people”.

During this current political campaign I have noticed how the mainstream media will focus upon some trivial issue and harp on it until anyone with an IQ above 50 gets sick of it. The media tends to focus on subjects such as which candidate’s wife wears the most expensive dress or some equally irrelevant topic. In my opinion, the upcoming election is the most critical one in the history of this nation.

The one thing that has allowed our country to become the greatest nation that the world has ever seen is freedom. Most of us alive today have not had to sacrifice for that freedom. It is a sad fact that, without sacrifice, too many people take our freedoms for granted. Our system of government was designed to give us the freedom to pursue wealth and happiness. Without freedom all of us become property of the state. Recently I have become aware of an ominous trend by our president.

Previous presidents, mainly for use in times of emergency, have used executive orders. During the presidencies of Bill Clinton and George Bush both of them combined issued 77 executive orders in sixteen years. During 3 and one half years Barack Obama has issued 923 executive orders. These orders would give the president dictatorial powers over all aspects of American life. These orders would allow the government to take control of all industry, farmland, transportation, etc. Thomas Jefferson warned us about this kind of behavior. He said, “ As the size of government grows freedom decreases “. In the past most Americans would have been alarmed over all of the executive orders, today our citizens just shrug it off.

I often wonder where the press is? If were not for the Internet most people would never know about these orders until they were being implemented. These kinds of issues can have a profound impact upon the quality of life that we Americans have become accustomed to. One of the founding fathers made the comment that the price of freedom is eternal vigilance. We Americans would be very foolish to rely upon the mainstream press, whose big story is who designed the gown worn by the president or his wife.
