WHAT WOULD GEORGE DO?
In just a few days we Americans will go to the polls to decide who will lead this nation for the next four years. While politics is our method to operate the madness in government, we seem to have lost focus on what is really important in our country. The founders of this nation understood that the freer a society is the more wealth and power that society will attain. In the beginning of our nation our people worked towards a common goal. They were all pulling together like a well-trained team of horses. Their goal was to create a country whose purpose was to insure liberty and freedom for all of its citizens. Today far too many of our people are more akin to a bunch of wild horses tied together with no sense of direction or focus.
Instead of having a common goal of freedom, we have gotten into the mentality of wanting to get our share of something from the government before it is all gone. Maybe we Americans have just become distracted because of the materialistic world we live in today. The founders of this nation paid a heavy price for the freedoms that we all take for granted. When I read about the sacrifices that our founders made to form this nation, the things that we worry about today are small in comparison.
Today many Americans make all kinds of excuses to not go and vote; I am sure that the early patriots of our county would have considered themselves lucky to be able to have had that right. We seem all too ready to vote away our freedoms that so many have sacrificed so much for. It is hard to imagine the hardships that a poorly trained Continental Army faced at Valley Forge. They were on the verge of starvation, poorly equipped and close to being frozen to death. Even with all of those hardships the worse was yet to come; in battle they would be facing the superpower of that day, the British Army. While we modern day Americans take our freedom for granted, our founders had experienced an oppressive government and were willing to gamble everything for freedom. Maybe to really appreciate freedom one needs to have had to sacrifice something for it.
In this election cycle we Americans will have a choice of freedom or more government with less freedom. Our founders gave us the ability to make decisions for ourselves; it is our duty to stay informed and to ask the hard questions. We can exercise those rights with little fear of reprisals. If George Washington were alive today what would be his decision? I feel that his decision would be very simple, always go to the side of freedom.
