THE CONSERVATIVE VIEW

A BEARDED MAN

I have been listening to the controversy over the comments of Phil Robertson from the Duck Dynasty television show. I have never watched the show and know very little about it, however I have seen countless tee shirts with the Duck Dynasty logo on them along with the images of bearded men, which included Phil Robertson. Because of the popularity I can assume that the stars of the show have benefited financially because of it. Many people would do anything to not rock the boat in order to keep the party going a little longer, but that doesn’t seem to be the case of Mr. Robertson.

I have not read the total interview that all of the controversy is about, but I have heard excerpts of it. From what I have heard Mr. Robertson gave blunt and honest answers concerning his Christian faith on several subjects, among them the subject of homosexuality. In the interview he said that according to his faith such practices are a sin and because of being true to his faith he came under instant attack. The producers of the Duck Dynasty show suspended him the day after the interview.

The actions of the so-called entertainment industry are a pretty good indicator of how far our morals and Christian beliefs have slipped in this country. Some of the junk that we watch on primetime television would have caused public outrage just a few years ago, now we take it in stride and accept it as normal. We are allowing our children to be indoctrinated into the belief that all manner of perverted behavior is safe and healthy, while in reality it is quite the opposite. When someone like Mr. Robertson comes along and professes his belief in the Christian religion the entertainment industry, along with the politically correct crowd, comes unglued.

I also believe in the Christian religion and I accept it by faith. While I do not claim to be a perfect man, I believe that much of the problems that we are facing today is simply because we as Christians have not stood up in support of what is written in our holy book the Bible. I have witnessed so-called Christians support some of our political leaders that are nothing short of perverts because they might grant some benefit or special favor. It amazes me how cheap they make the Christian religion. Mr. Robertson has stood by his statements and refuses to make an apology even though it may cost him a huge sum of money. I was taught that ‘what would it profit a man to have the whole world and lose his soul.’

I have found that most of the time people know their behavior is wrong but they don’t want to be reminded of it. In the interview I did not hear Mr. Robertson advocate violence, and yet he has come under vicious attacks from several directions. It kind of reminds me of another bearded man that walked this earth over 2000 years who talked of peace and love of his fellow man and was hung on a cross for his teachings. We are about to enter a new year; maybe we should make a resolution to be more like the bearded men in this column.
