THE CONSERVATIVE VIEW

BY RUSSELL TURNER

DESTROYER OF HUMAN SPIRIT

I have always enjoyed watching sermons by Reverend Billy Graham; he has always had the ability to give a perspective on the problems that we face every day. In one of his sermons he was talking about the loss of the moral fiber that made our country great. He went on to say that if you wanted to make someone miserable simply give them everything they want. Sadly today there is a constant flood of people demanding more and more funding and benefits from our government.

I have heard it said that the government loves poor people and by the results I have seen I would have to agree, our government does a good job of creating them. WeAmericans are a generous people, and most of us are fine with having a safety net that helps people who get down on their luck, but there is a huge difference the way conservatives and liberals deal with the problem. We conservatives believe in programs that that will ultimately allow the poor to become self sufficient and no longer need government assistance. The liberal philosophy has done everything humanly possible to turn that safety net into a hammock. They oppose limiting the amount of time people can be on the programs along with drug testing and work requirements. The liberal philosophy has encouraged many people to accept dependency upon the government as a career.

While I don’t agree with all of the ideas of President Franklin Roosevelt, I do agree with one of his statements. He said, "The lessons of history, confirmed by the evidence immediately before me, show conclusively that continued dependence upon relief induces a spiritual disintegration fundamentally destructive to the national fiber. To dole out relief in this way is to administer a narcotic, a subtle destroyer of the human spirit. It is inimical to the dictates of a sound policy. It is in violation of the traditions of America. Work must be found for able-bodied but destitute workers."

Many of today’s politicians have found out that it is easier to control the population when they are poor. Too many of the voters today simply vote for the politician that promises them the most entitlements. Our nation was not built with those current ideas. Our parents and grandparents understood the value of work and with their work they built the American middle class, but because of the current monetary and fiscal policies the middle class is declining.

Over the past years we have all heard of the trend of young people moving back in with their parents due to the lack of jobs. The LA Times recently had a shocking account of the swelling number of people aged 50 to 64 forced by economic conditions to move in with their parents. For seven years through 2012, the number of Californians aged 50 to 64 who lived in their parents’ homes swelled 67.6% to about 194,000; these people who should be in their peak earnings years but are without jobs. Government waste and excessive spending are dragging our economy down and destroying our human spirit.
