WHEN WILL THE PARTY END
Over the years I have attend several events and all of them have one thing in common, no matter how much fun they may be eventually they will end. A few nights ago I was watching a program where one of the reporters was interviewing college students about current events and the founding principles of our nation. I know that there are always exceptions to the rule and there are many young people that care about our country and have educated themselves on the exceptionalism of America, but the answers from the interviewees should be of concern to all of us. Most of the respondents could not name any of their elected officials such as a senator or congressman; they also couldn’t recognize simple quotes from our founders that an elementary student should have known. The college students were interviewed during spring break and I realize that they were having a good time, but we all need to understand that parties should be a very short rest from reality and not something that will last forever.
I have found that having a good time is ok, but there is a time to get serious. I feel that we Americans are becoming a victim of our own success and wealth. Too many of us are only concerned about having a good time and are foolishly relying on some politician or government to deal with the serious things. The entitlement attitude that has engulfed our nation is destroying it. Recently my wife and I researched the life of some of her relatives that homesteaded in New Mexico during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, I have always admired the drive and energy that pioneering people had. During that time there was no entitlement programs and they realized that to make their life easier it was up to them to do it. They understood that reading and educating themselves was the key to making life easier. I am afraid that getting serious is a trait that we Americans are losing.
It was Ronald Reagan that said freedom is always one generation away from being lost. If our future leaders do not know what has made America exceptional, how can we expect them to preserve something they know nothing about? Our nation was founded upon conservative Judeo Christian values; today there are too many flaming liberals that want to promote the idea that America has only achieved greatness by victimizing the rest of the world. We Americans have somehow allowed too many of these radical progressives into our colleges and universities who have unduly influenced our younger generation. Our nation is only as strong as we as individuals make it.
Having a party can be fun for a while, but if we persist in partying too long the hangover the next day will be a killer. If we Americans don’t start getting serious, the America I grew up knowing will no longer exist.
