The threat of backfill of rogue groups in place of recently defeated ones is not a new concept. But, besides the lessons in war from centries old playbooks the POTUS decides to evacuate troops from the region of unrest, inspite of the protest of military advisors and intelligence communities. That was a break down in leadership which can not be denied, but is that the main problem. Acutely not, the main problem is allowing a bigger problem go unchecked via talks, embargos etc. when action should take place. Speaking of Iran, the same state which sponsor the terrorist ISIS to begin with along with Syria. Only in the instance with Iran we are looking at the near term aquisition of nuclear arms.
Where will a failure leave us in a nuclear armed Iran? To say the least a war. I would assume in the interest in Israel's national security, they would be left with no choice, but to pre-emptively strike all major targets to elliminate the threat. However, recent aquisitions to anti-air missile systems leave Israel with an logistical problem. Assuming, the defense systems under older Russian technology offer superior stand-off capability for Iran, Israel would suffer some losses. This leaves a decision for the leaders of Israel which can be world changing. Remain conventional or go unconventional, with high stakes in both options.
Can this be overted, i believe yes. The language has to change and the options must change. Either surrender nuclear ideas or we (free world) make the choice for them. No uncertain terms, spelled out bluntly. Peace has never been free, and war has never been pretty, we all suffer from war. But there is truely no place for an ISIS sponsoring state to possess the capability to destroy nations, when they pledge the destruction of an allied nation.
Is this illrational thinking? This administration saw ISIS as sideliners who wouldn't mount to a problem, today we stand in Iraq again facing the erradication of an enemy which is larger and better equipped than before. Hellbent on causing mayhelm and destruction and spits on America and others in flevorant defiance. Who's mission is nothing more than causing termoil and trouble for the free world.
Can they be stopped? Yes, nothing short of the first time we entered Iraq, but this time they are spread out and more canage is expected to innocent civilians to get them out. It is likely to become really ugly when they start seeing the likelihood they may loose. I believe the mass atrocities will increase on the grand scale, where all people in their path become victims.
Can that be stopped? I believe it can be minimized by the up tempo of the war, but it will be necessary to put a well trained and tough force on the ground to run them without time to cause the destruction they are capable of; we must leave no stragglers, no one to come back to create this mess again.
Is the focus of leaving none behind important? Yes, ISIS already have planned for a long drawn out war, they are now training children and others to carry out their legacy of desruction.
