A Choice of Photography

This old church was captured as a part of Urban Exploration Photography and preservation of natural history of the town.

Many times I have heard people say they ought to take up photography as part of their profession.  Many people don't really understand photography is much like art and sometimes science, you don't just take it up.
Either you have a desire for it and a willingness to learn or you need to stick with the occasional snapshot off the phone camera or point-n-shoot camera.  Leave the actual photographic quality shots to those who take it seriously.

Many people who have become photographers have had an interest in photos, and taking photos for some time, perhaps early on in their lives, which lead up to their decision to invest into their hobby or profession.  There are those who live and breath for the moment to get the next shot, while there are those who simply go to work assisting another photographer who owns a business and simply looks at it as work.  Photography is a more than just a job, it is an expression of ones creativity and ones style.  The person who does not take making photos a personal endeavor will not excel in terms of creativity nor will their ideas be perceived by the rest of the photography world as inspiring or a challenge to them to create.  After all anyone who has a camera can aim it at a subject and click the shutter button.  And most studied photographers will understand the principles of lighting on a subject.

Studio photography can be an easy task or a very difficult thing depending on the demand and commission that is given to create a great shot.  But, studios can also take away from the photographers enjoyment of photography and lead to the feeling one is simple doing it for a job.  Their must be challenges and new learning taking place to inspire creativity in the photographer, therefore when in a studio based environment one must also think out side that box, sometimes it is best to pick up the studio and move it outdoors or to another location which lends inspiration.  Choosing scenes that isn't just your typical green screen or curtain drop, but actual environmental backgrounds.  This doesn't preclude the use of the studio for specific shots that can better be controlled under stringent lighting conditions or avoids bad seasonal weather.

A good photographer will always look forward to learning something new, this may include looking at other peoples work, reading about creative photography styles, subscribing to photographic magazines or on-line sites and keeping up with trends.  But, also it is good that a photographer learn about the past and take insight from those creative artist who sought to paint a portrait using their unique talents to capture the light as it hit the subjects and to portray more an three dimensional representation of their subjects.  Always be willing to change and to accept change in order to create a better photograph.  If the photo doesn't look good at one angle then change your perspective, move around even may require changing the time of day to get the right light.  But first and foremost the photographer must also be concerned with getting the shot, take your photo and then improve upon it.  At the end of the day, you still got the shot even if everything else did not work out so well.

Lastly never give up, there may be day when all as gone not so good; rain, clouds, people don't show up, stepped in a mud puddle or what ever.  You must be willing to go those steps to get the end result.  You may note what others had to go through to get award winning photographs, they were always there at to spot by chance, they knew there would be an opportunity and they traveled to the location, sometimes over long distances or travel afoot through hostile areas to reach the spot they knew they would be able to get a great shot.  Many photographers have a mission, that mission is to set goals and work towards their goals, which often take planning.  Plan on what all it will take to get them to a point they need to be to get a photography.  The photo can be of a movie star, a dignitary, a location up in the mountains, or even a location in a foreign country.  Photography can be motivated by ambition, by desire to achieve or by compassion after something we enjoy doing.  In the end you must have some driving force behind you to gather the photos you need.  What is your driving force.
