DISTRACTION AND DEEP DOO-DOO
A couple of days ago I heard a news story that claimed that more people in America are killed while being distracted taking selfie photographs with their cell phone than are being killed by shark attacks. It is a sad fact that distraction is all too common in other aspects of our lives. We Americans are blessed with all kinds of electronic devices, but we seem to be ill informed on national issues. Too many of our citizens feel they are properly informed on the important issues if they simply watch the 6 and 10 o’clocknews. In my opinion, if the mainstream media is the only reliable source of information we are in very deep doo-doo.
If there was ever a time in the history of this nation where the citizens need to be properly informed it is now. As I watched the presidential debates the questions asked sound more like something you would hear teenagers gossiping about. Who cares if Donnie doesn’t like Carly’s face? Instead of trying to stir up some childish feud, the moderators should be asking what their solution would be on topics such as repairing the disaster that Obamacare has had upon this nation, stopping the endless spending and increasing the national debt, etc. One of the biggest issues on the horizon is the eventual increase on interest rates in this country. The leaders of this nation have run the interest rates to almost 0% in an ill-conceived scheme to stimulate the economy. The result of 0% interest has been to deny the senior citizen savers of this country a source of income that they planned to live on during their retirement. Also the 0% rate has encouraged some people to borrow more than they can repay; when the interest rate does go up it will be equivalent to an earthquake. If you are a person that feels that you are properly informed by watching the evening news you probably haven’t even heard about it.
A few days ago Donald Trump came under fire when an individual at one of his rallies made a statement about his belief that President Obama is a member of the Muslim faith. The news media made the assertion that Trump should have told the man that President Obama is a Christian. I do not think that Trump or any of us can honestly say what religion our president practices; in my opinion that is between him and God himself. I believe that you will know the content of a man’s heart by his actions. As far as our president is concerned I have some serious concerns about his actions since he was elected president. The man making the accusation to Trump was later reported as being an anti-Tea Party individual who was only trying to embarrass Trump and cause a distraction from the big issues facing this nation. Trump brushed the question off and later said that it wasn’t his job to defend President Obama.
Much of the problems in this country can be traced back to the voters being distracted from the big issues. It is possible to become informed, but it requires a little effort by us Americans. Take the time to read and search out sources of information that will tell both sides of an issue, and above all be cautious of selfies, sharks and the news media.
