BLOOD IN THE RING

When I was a child I used to make sure that I was home on Saturday afternoons so that I could watch the old championship-wrestling matches. I can still remember some of my heroes; I always noticed that usually one of the good guys was always matched up with one of the truly evil ones. Being a child I believed that all of the fights going on in the ring were on the up and up. After a time I could see that the matches usually had a predictable course; one wrestler would completely beat his opponent senseless, then somehow the opponent would gain his second wind and beat the other wrestler senseless and go on to win the match. I also like to watch boxing and I noticed that many times one or both of the boxers would be bleeding or have an eye swelled shut because of receiving punches to the head. The wrestlers seldom had a scratch even after the so-called beating and these guys were really big. These guys had the ability to break bones and kill someone if they really wanted to. I came to the conclusion that each wrestler knew that the other could really do some damage so they agreed to not hurt each other. Before, during and after they would scream and yell at each other but I am sure that each of them were able to go home to supper after each match. All of their bravado and threatening talk remind me of the political theater we witness on the evening news.

We have candidates who claim to have all of the answers and usually do nothing but attack other candidates with lies and half-truths. Since 2008, US official debt has doubled, and government budget projections show they have no plan to pay down a penny of it. It’s even more insane to think that after generations of bad decisions that a single person can restore grandeur and prosperity in a few months, or even years, especially when almost everything the government does makes things worse. We’re told that if you’re dissatisfied, go to the voting booth and cast a ballot. It took decades to get into this mess, and it’s a total farce to believe that the way out is to simply go down to the voting booth and cast a ballot.

It is nice to have heroes like I did when I was a child, but sometimes you need to look at what is really going on. To get our financial house in order will not be easy and painless. We must not make heroes out of corrupt politicians that are only telling you what you want to hear. We as voters must make the right decision on who is there just for show and who is ready to leave some blood in the ring.
