THE CONSERVATIVE VIEW

BY RUSSELL TURNER

A GIANT REMEMBERED

Earlier this week America lost a conservative icon, Phyllis Schlafly passed away at the age of 92. I have always been a conservative, and Phyllis Schlafly was an inspiration to all of us who believed in the conservative philosophy. Several years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Schlafly in person. She understood the founding principles of our nation and the duty that all Americans have to preserve and protect our way of life. I would like to share a short passage from one of her books.
“I can look back on campaigns in which I saw Republicans on the local level working their hearts out for a cause they believed to be just, only to realize, after it was all over, that the kingmakers had given them a candidate who would not campaign on the issues. I speak with the voice of the countless Republican Party workers who don't want this to happen again; in the words of the greatest Republican slogan of this century, they have "had enough".

That simple quote is prophetic of what is happening in our state and nation today. A lady once told me when it comes to politics there are two kinds of people. There are those of us who are passionate about what is happening in our nation and the other group doesn’t care and doesn’t want to be bothered with politics. She went on to say that there is no in-between on these two positions. I have noticed that many politicians don’t like to campaign to the passionate people, for the most part they are informed and they will hold the politicians accountable. The average politician of today realizes that there are far more citizens that don’t want to be bothered with the issues than there are of the passionate variety. It is far easier to sway the uninformed voter with some slick piece of mail than to sway someone who is informed. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know which group they target in their campaign.

We conservatives believe that it is imperative that our people start taking their role in government and politics more serious. Too many of our people have abdicated their responsibility in the affairs of this nation. Our government wasn’t set up to be some kind of Santa Claus or Robin Hood. It was set up for the protection of our God given rights of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. It has been my observation that politics gets in the way of good government.  Too many times we have elected so-called conservatives who show their true colors after they are elected. Far too often we Americans are asked to sacrifice more of our liberties because they claim that the system is not working. In reality the founders gave us the ability to counter the illegal and un-constitutional abuses of our elected officials. Many of our elected officials are paralyzed with political correctness and a fear of the liberal main stream news media.

Phyllis Schlafly understood the dilemma our nation faces, she will be greatly missed, and may she rest in peace.
