ANNOYING DRIPS AND WATER BILLS
I have found that given enough time we humans have a tendency to accept things that, in the beginning, would drive us crazy. One example that comes to my mind is trying to take a nap and all of a sudden you hear a leaky water faucet. For some reason, every time a drip of water falls into the sink it gets compounded in your mind and it becomes impossible to relax. However, if you don’t want to call the local plumber and you just let the faucet drip, over a little amount of time we become completely oblivious to the sound; it even gets to the point we would not even know we have a drip until we get an inflated water bill. The same principle that dulls our senses to an annoying water drip also applies to an out of control and bloated government.
Humans have a bad habit of getting into a rut; I have often heard people give the excuse to avoid fixing a problem by saying, “Well, it has always been done that way.” The problem with that attitude is that nothing ever gets fixed and usually the situation only gets worse. Our government has become far removed from the days of George Washington, when the federal government employed just a handful of people in three small departments — State, Treasury and War. Today the United States federal government employees 3.2 million people. When you compare those numbers to other nations maybe it explains why we are the biggest debtor nation in the world. For instance, India has 1.33 billion people compared to our 330 million people. India has roughly one billion more people than our country. When you combine India’s two biggest employers, 1.4 million armed forces and 1.3 million railroad workers, that gives them a total of 2.7 million.
From what I have read the US government is the biggest employer in the history of the world. Here in America our biggest private sector employer is the Wal-Mart Corporation. In America and Puerto Rico they have over 5,000 stores; those stores employ roughly 2 million people. Even with all of the services Wal-Mart offers, the workforce of the US government is over 50% larger. Over the past few days President Elect Trump has been talking about our government being too large and employing too many people.
Today I listened to the first speech President Trump gave to the American people. I am very impressed with his straight forward style of speaking, and I have more hope for our nation than I have had in a very long time. The problems that he spoke of are not limited just to Washington DC. In all levels of government the in-clique groups and the elites are perfectly content with poor government as long as they get what they want. Like a dripping faucet, we Americans have tolerated a government out of control for far too long. For those of us who voted for President Trump, we need to remember the work has just begun. Any one man cannot do it all himself, it takes all of us doing our part so let’s get to work.
t so let’s get to work.
